The amargo is a small tropical tree that grows in Brazil, Peru, Venezuela, Suriname, Colombia, Argentina and Guinea, and reaches the maximum height of 2-6 meters. Called in botanical Quassia amara, common name derived amargo Spanish, refers to his taste very bitter.

The amargo bark contains many active constituents, including the principles amari 50 times more than quinine. In addition to many of the elements present in the antimalarials quinine, the amargo contains a chemical element called Quassin, which gives an index of  amargo bitterness of 400,000. Several clinical studies have verified on amargo its traditional use as natural insecticide, documenting an effective action for the treatment of lice.
